I love a plan. I love a schedule.

But, even on the best of days, planning with a toddler is often asinine–one day coloring is all the rage…the next day coloring lasts all of 30 seconds…One day she’ll eat her vegetables…the next day she won’t… Toddlers are unpredictable…

And for a planner like myself–that can be hard. And frustrating. And, OK, fine… It DRIVES… ME… CRAZY.

But, of course, I’m finding that when I let go of the plan… when I try to go with the flow… the un-planned moments are often the sweetest.

A few days ago I had every intention of taking Miss Addie for a nice long walk in the stroller after she woke up from her nap. In typical toddler  fashion– Addie had another idea…

Instead of forcing the walk… I let Addie take the lead…We ended up relaxing in the nursery for almost an hour– we snuggled and read and talked about how Addie is going to be a big sister soon. And it was time perfectly spent… for both of us…

I’m not going to abandon our schedule– I firmly believe in the importance of structure and routine– but I am going to try to go with the flow a little more… something that’s challenging for this planner…

  1. It’s often the unplanned moments that are the best. I just took my five year old to the zoo and he was a miserable mess. On the way home to try to salvage the day, we made an impromptu stop at a playground we always visit, and he was saying, “This is the best day ever!”
